3 Relationships You Must Have in the Office
If you’re working in an office building, you get to interact with so many people throughout the day. If you’re telecommuting, this is still possible, although to a lesser degree. With all the people you meet, here are the 3 essential office relationships to cultivate:
The ally. This is like your office best friend. He or she always has your back and is very supportive of everything you do. Sometimes, this person even covers for you when you make mistakes. The office ally is important, because this assures that you’ll always have someone on your side when the going gets tough.
The mentor. You don’t know everything, but for now it seems like your office mentor does. This is the person with more experience or knowhow than you. Usually mentors are older and higher up in the office hierarchy. Consciously or not, they pass on their wisdom from you so that you’ll learn from both their great successes and their worst mistakes. You can have more than one mentor, and they can help you grow in a myriad of areas including your outlook in life, client relations, work-life balance, productivity, and other relevant aspects of work.
The competition. This person could be from within your company or from one similar to yours. The point is that you’re always competing with each other, whether it’s in terms of productivity, output, performance, benefits - anything. Just make sure that the competition is healthy and constructive. You don’t put each other down, but you do love outdoing and outsmarting each other.
Having a competitor is important as it makes sure that you’re always improving yourself. After all, you don’t want to lose the game.
Do you have a competitor, ally, or mentor in the workplace? How has the relationship helped or hindered you when it comes to growth?
