How to have better teleconferences

by Tris Hussey on January 29th, 2007

I can always count on Web Worker Daily to inspire me for something here.  This post on teleconferences has gotten some serious traction and attention, and that’s great!  Why?  Because a lot of teleconferences suck.  Anne posted some great tips, and I can’t find fault with any of them.  But I have one more to add: get a phone with a mute button.  Why?  Well, if you are interrupted you can listen to the conference but also have a conversation with someone else off conference.  It’s also good if you have to take a sip of coffee or sneeze.

Oh and besides taking notes to stay focused, try playing solitaire (sound off on your computer … that’s one I don’t think she mentioned … mute your computer speakers).  When on long boring conference calls in the past I could focus a lot better if I played solitaire at the same time.  This assumes that you’re not taking notes, of course.  Why did it work for me?  It kept me from surfing, checking e-mail or just checking out.

So now that we know what makes for a good teleconference, let’s hear your teleconference horror stories.
