More speed tweaks for Vista

by Tris Hussey on April 6th, 2007

Yep, I’ve covered this before and I’m covering it again.  Why?  Well because I find it a good idea to compare tweaks and see when the same ones keep coming up.  If the tweaks are good, you’ll see them a lot, if not … you won’t.  Extreme Tech had some tweak-er-ific fun lately…

Unlike previous Microsoft operating systems, Windows Vista is pretty streamlined right out of the box. It makes terrific use of a system’s resources, but it’s built as much for pretty looks and increased stability and security as it is for horsepower. It’s time now for a course of action that will take the ball and chain off this baby and let it fly.

The ink on Windows Vista’s EULA is barely dry, so it’s very likely that more speed tips, registry hacks, and deep settings will be revealed in the weeks, months, and years to come. For now, here’s our set of tweaks that can help you turn up the throttle on your new operating system.

This is not your one page article with a couple of tweaks.  No, this is a multi-page article with tweaks that start simple and get more complex as you get deeper into the OS.  Lots of tweaks you’ve seen before (toning down the Vista UI is common) and some I didn’t know (for best ReadyBoost performance pick a flash drive equal to the amount of physical RAM you have…for me that’s 1 gig).  More important, almost all of these tweaks are easily reversible.  They are just simple ticks and unticks.  This should give the faint of heart a little piece of mind.  Yes, there are some registry tweaks.  I’m not a big fan of tweaking my registry.  There is a big of risk and the roll back can be less than fun.  Unless you’re trying to squeeze every last freakin’ ounce of power out of your machine, just stick to the simple stuff.
