Some e-mail management tips that might help the post-holiday overload
An early Happy Thanksgiving to all your Work Pimps out there. Scot let me know that he’s going to be enjoying the holiday time starting, oh about an hour ago, so it’s just me here until Tuesday.
Yes, yes while I am American by birth, I live in Canada now and our Thanksgiving was last month (on Columbus Day, actually). Anyway my GTD Technorati feed pinged this gem up yesterday … a slew of e-mail management tips. Internet time highlights a few of the 99 (yikes!) that ITSecurity talks about (hmm, I guess I have time to read 99 e-mail tips) and of course the stalwart 43 Folders has a quick five tips for you too (it’s a blast from the past post).
So of the tips I read, some are easy and good (be professional, be brief, don’t e-mail angry) but the first one on the 43 Folders post has me challenged: turn off auto-check or increase time to 20 mins. Wow. Outlook checks every 5 mins. for me. Yes, five. Now I was thinking that, come on, I need to know if someone e-mails me. Yeah, do I need to know every 5 mins? If I want to see if someone just send me something F9 does that trick. Often in my IM chats with folks they will type ygm (You got mail) … I can check right then. Okay, okay I’ll turn down the checking. I’ll see if that helps. Why not.
I did, while mulling over that last paragraph, skim through the 99 tips. It is worth a read. Lots of tips, most practical, lots are no brainers to many of us. Always good to refresh our memory, though right?
Regardless, e-mail, like it or not, is a cornerstone of our modern existence, so a few good tips are always welcome.

[…] In my last post I talked about ITSecurity’s 99 e-mail tips. While reading it, three tips caught my eye: 88. Encrypt emails. Never send important/ private information by email unless you have encrypted it. And even then, think twice before sending it. Also keep in mind that certain forms of encryption may be illegal in your country. The difficulties surrounding encryption mean that sensitive/ private information is still best sent on paper or via phone. If you want to take the encryption route, 5 steps to make your email secure explains some of the options. […]
