What do us pimps use to work better? Here’s the list
Ever wonder what folks like us use day to day? E-mail, PIM, RSS, web browser … I posed this question to my fellow PYW writers and this is what I got back.
Scot:
- E-mail - work: Outlook. Home: Yahoo on my domain name
- PIM - Treo 650 (Palm)
- Desktop search - None. Tried two and didn’t like either one
- web browser - Firefox, Firefox, Firefox
- RSS reading - Wizz RSS 2.1.6 (add-in for Firefox) Also used Bloglines.
- blog posts - Blog Desk
- PDA - Treo 650 (Palm)
Lena (editor of PYW):
- E-mail - UebiMaiu - I despise it and because, after repeated requests, my hosting company won’t offer anything better, I’m leaving them and moving to GoDaddy. Their web mail client is superb and even lets to schedule when to send an email. Now, if I can just back-up my site and skidaddle.
- PIM - Palm Vx (old school and I’m keepin’ it that way)
- Desktop search - nothing. I’m extremely organized and I never need to search because I don’t lose things.
- web browser - IE
- RSS reading - MyYahoo (it’s my home page, too)
- blog posts - WordPress or Typepad interface. I’m not a fan of installing separate pieces of software to get things done. Plus, I’m on the go a lot and web-based works better for me.
- PDA - see PIM above
Doug (fearless leader/channel editor for the Business Channel):
- E-mail: SquirrelMail webmail for most things, Thunderbird (b5media things)
- PIM: Paper binder, folder with notepad documents, desk calendar Desktop search: None. I have obsessively organized folders and rarely have a problem finding things.
- Web browser: Firefox
- RSS: Tried a thousand of them. I like Omea Reader - the only one I’ve used and have been happy with.
- Blog posts: Word, followed by Notepad (to remove formatting), followed by WordPress WYSIWYG editor. If it gets ugly, I use Dreamweaver
- PDA: Had a Palm - didn’t like it. I use my cellphone to check my email sometimes and for calls, but that’s about it.
Me:
- E-mail: Outlook. I have all my accounted forwarded to GMail then Outlook checks that.
- PIM: Outlook/Blackberry
- Desktop search: Copernic at the moment, but who knows week to week.
- Web browser: IE7
- RSS: Attensa for Outlook 2.0
- Blog posting: Qumana (of course)
- PDA: Blackberry 7130e
So there you have it. So, what do you use?

Tris,
I have updates to what I use, actually.
For blog posts, I have started to use Windows Live Writer (Beta) and like it quite a bit.
Also notable mentions are my calendar app (Google Calendar - I actually like it) and my to do list application (Remember the Milk - I love it).
I’m thinking of buying a Blackberry/PDA type thing. Maybe a post on that with some resources could be an upcoming one?

Good question here. I’m a big fan of free and opensource.
For Office Applications, I use OpenOffice and Gmail’s docs and spreadsheets.
I use Gmail for email coupled with Google Talk for IM. Everything gets forwarded to my gmail account.
For Blogging, I use Blogdesk.
For images, I use Picasa2, The Gimp and Paint Shop Pro
For Notes I use KeyNote
For Podcasts, I use Juice
Antivirus: AntiVir
Other Software: Bryce 5, Dreamweaver, Skype, Audacity

Doug: I like LW as well. Nice app and good features. I haven’t seen an update for a while, but I hope they improve it. I’m glad that you’re hoping into the 21st century now ;-).
GeorgeWilliam: I agree. I like open source apps a lot myself. I tried to go that route for a number of years, but just found that collaborating with mainstream users kept forcing me back into Microsoft’s camp. Skype and Gtalk are clear winners in my book. I like Google Docs too … the import/export to Word is very nice.William

I’m also now using Google Reader for my RSS stuff. I’m liking it better than Wizz RSS, but both are pretty good.

I’ve heard good things about Google Reader. I found it a bit sluggish for me, but then I also like to be able to read my posts offline while on the ferry.
Scoble likes it, so it must be alright. He’s pretty harsh on feed readers.

That’s what I like about Omea Reader. It downloads posts (fairly quickly, too) and is very quick. You can go through them almost like emails (just push the delete key and they are gone) or do something else like file them, take notes from them, keep them sitting there, etc. I love it.

[…] I had a meeting away from the computer for a few hours and unlike one of my partners, I have not yet succumbed to the "Crack Berry" situation. As a result, I have been unable to follow the Jason Calacanis situation minute by minute. I have caught up thanks to the handy RSS reader, and since I have Robert Scoble on "full alert" in my reader, I wanted to get his take on the Calacanis matter. I wondered whether Robert has come up with some guru on top of the mountain revelation of the way of the path to the perfect blogosphere, but I think his prediction of Jason making his own splash in the podcasting pond is easily predictable. The recent Blog Business Summit taught me something while I was there. For those that have conquered the blog and mastered its way of the business world, they are on to the bigger the better the faster and the shinier. They are all on to podcasting and video. I can only assume from the Calacanis and AOL divorce, we may again see a marriage between "money" and "vision" very soon make its way to the altar. I see perhaps not only the marriage, but what about a podcast network offspring? […]

PIM: None; played with Google Calendar but haven’t gotten into the habit of updating it.
Desktop search: None
Web browser: Firefox; Used to be an IE man since I used an old version of Movable Type that worked best on it. I tried Firefox as my prime brower and am almost hooked. The tabbed browsing is a taskbar space-saver.
RSS reading: RSSOwl because I like the speed of a desktop reader. I also have a few feeds on my MyYahoo page.
Weblogging: I recently moved to WordPress. It blocks all the spam my old version of Movable Type didn’t. I also like the plug-in architecture.
PDA: None. I barely use my cell phone. I would like an inexpensive device to write weblog post when I don’t have computer access.
