What is your source of work satisfaction?
The satisfaction from your work accomplishments count. Perhaps not in the way you think.
Are you proud of cutting your budget 5% over last year? Or, are you proud of growing your business by 5% last year?
Are you happy you were able to optimize your processes and getting a 5% productivity boost in your operations? Or, are you happy you added five new processes to the operations?
Different people get work satisfaction from accomplishing different things. Some people like to build things. Others like to tweak or optimize things. Others feel better if they can cut things back to the bare minimum while maximizing the return for the work. All are necessary functions in the business world.
All that’s obvious, right?
But when you are working in your corporate environment and your satisfaction comes from the accomplishment of building something and your company decides to change direction and cut back to a bare minimum, I’ll bet you’ll start to feel pretty uncomfortable with the work you will be force to do.
When I look at what satisfaction I got from my work life last year, it was clear to me that I like to build things — but spent most of my corporate work cutting back to a bare minimum. Clearly the right choice for my company. But not such a great choice for me.
When you find yourself in a situation where your company is going one way and your source of work satisfaction is in a different area, ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this change in direction permanent? If so, you will rapidly lose your enthusiasm for the work. Perhaps your company will lose its enthusiasm for you, too!
- How can I change to the direction of the company and still maintain work satisfaction? Sometimes shifting positions within a company can help or working on different types of projects can help.
- How fast can I influence the change in direction to something that is better suited to my work satisfaction? In smaller companies, individuals play a much larger role in how quickly something gets done. If this is your case, work the undesirable situation as quickly as possible to get back to something better.
When you list several accomplishments in reviewing your work — but feel no satisfaction from the work you did — its time to start looking at your sources of work satisfaction.
