Pimp Your Work - Improving Your Work Day Efficiency

What’s your best place for GTD?

by Tris Hussey on January 3rd, 2007

WebWorkerDaily is asking that age-old question of tele-workers everywhere—where is your favourite place to be most productive.  You all know mine, BC Ferries.  Quite (sorta), focused, and best of all, time-limited.  I get a lot done when I have have a little time pressure to push me.

Personally, I always find that familiar places to be productive. My home office is my number one location and I actually enjoy working there, and get the most done without the distractions of a more public location. However, when the time comes for getting down with some serious creative thinking, those noisy, busy locations like a cafe or public locations seem to work just fine for some inspiration. How do you work?

I think for all you folks trying to get stuff done in the new year, focus is the most important.  What can you do to help your focus, and where can you do that best.  Sometimes I’ll move from my office to the couch just for the change of location.  I seem to read better on the couch, write better at my desk.

Rico, b5’s Contract Worker guru, for example finds listening to music a distraction while almost need it to get any work done.

How about you?

Mostly my house, but the occasional “road trip” is good for stimulation — cafe, park, etc. Also, this may sound horrible to some folks but every now and then I’ll write stuff out longhand in the backyard to get some fresh air, then do research online when I come back in. Somehow I seem to engage the brain a little differently when I’m writing than when I’m typing.

I waver on the music thing. It depends on the mood I’m in, but usually I like to have some.

Hey Geoff, thanks for stopping by! Just put the kettle on, coffee or tea? ;)

Anyway, I don’t think it’s so strange to write out stuff longhand (speaking as a guy with a dozen fountain pens and journals everywhere). There is something very different about writing on paper. More reflective I think.

I wish I could get the old AM station I listened to in Maine that carried the Red Sox games … man I could listen to that whenever. Old style commentary, just classic.

Hey Tris, it’s been a while, but now I’m considering listening to some forms of music. :)
