Pimp Your Work - Improving Your Work Day Efficiency

You Deserve a Break Today

by Kammie on October 9th, 2006

Stuck in a career rut? Over climbing the corporate ladder? Running in the rat race? Working the grind? Want some time to reflect? Recalibrate? Re-energize? The folks at careerbreaksite.com wish you would. In fact, they’d love to help you.

This site’s stock piled with articles, checklists, case studies, offers and discounts on everything from what to do with your stuff, what time of year to travel and where to go.

What exactly IS a Career Break? Well it’s not your average two weeks at an all-inclusive in Jamaica, that’s for sure! Here’s the 411 from the pro’s over at CB:

“It’s an opportunity to do something different. You might treat it as a gap year, using the time to travel, or learn new things, or take some time to figure out what you really want to do. A career break is not just sitting about not working. That’s called being unemployed! For it to be a career break, you have to plan to go back to work at some point.”

OK, now you know what one is, but WHY take one?

“Many people take career breaks simply because they can. You might be bored in your job and wonder if it’s really right for you. Even if you love your job, perhaps you never got a chance to tracel when you were younger, and now seems like a good time. If you’ve decided to switch careers, you might need a break to retrain. Or you might have an enforced career break, having to look after your kids or older relatives.”

Rachel Morgan Trimmer, Career Break’s founder, has this advice for those considering taking a break:

“Make sure you’re doing what you really want to do rather than what other people say you should do. This applies to the big decisions - like whether to quit your job or apply for a sabbatical - as well as the little ones, like going to a place you really want to see, even if everyone else says it’s rubbish! You might only ever get one career break, so it’s important that you make the most of it.”

Click on over and get inspired. And don’t give me any of that, “I’d never get more than my two weeks” business. Anna was going to resign and ended up getting a one year sabbatical! What are you waiting for? Hustle up buttercup. What’s the alternative - this?
