Pimp Your Work Asks: Do you prefer getting email in one place?

by Celine on April 18th, 2008

We’ve got a new feature called “Pimp Your Work Asks”, where I’ll ask some questions on how you readers work and what productivity systems you have in place. To participate, simply answer the question in the comments.

Pimp Your Work Asks: Do you prefer getting email in one place? Do you use Outlook, Thunderbird, or similar programs to keep all your email addresses in one interface? Or do you prefer to keep them separate? Why?

Yes! I use gmail primarily…I’ve got all my personal mail going there. I can’t get my work mail to gmail because I work for a large company with a super security focused IT department. ;)

I guess it’s two places, but I think of it as one… first email comes to me via mailwasher which let’s me see it on their servers before it hits my computers… it’s got good spam filters and is pretty decent at letting me set up filters of my own etc.

Then the screened email comes into eudora… I email from all of my email accounts there with different personalities.

Is that one place or two?

That seems more like one place, Anne, if you just use the Eudora interface most times.

Sandie: I guess high-security IT departments might affect how you view your work emails. If you had the option, would you just view it all on Gmail?

I check all my emails on Outlook via IMAP. I think it’s a mixture of habit and convenience. Outlook was “forced” on us in my previous work, and it just kind of stuck even if I’ve since shifted to freelance work.

Also, I use its Calendar feature for organizing my schedule. Pretty handy to have everything in one place.

@Celine I’m not sure…I get a LOT of attachments and most of my work emails are pretty sensitive. Plus, I end up saving a lot of them as .msg files…can’t do that with Gmail, can you?
