EverNote 2.0 and Evernote Outlook Extension Beta Released

by Tris Hussey on April 25th, 2007

I’ve been testing EverNote 2 beta for some time now, just a little while ago (last week I think), I got a ping that EverNote 2 was final and I should download the new version (actually throughout the beta period I received notices to update, which I very much appreciated).  Here a portion of the press release:

EverNote Plus now includes unique AIR-Search® (Advanced Image Recognition) technology, available to the public for the first time, which allows users to search within photos, scanned images and graphics in their EverNote collections for printed and handwritten text. With EverNote Portable, users who need the ability to run EverNote on any PC without installing the application can install EverNote on a USB Drive and enjoy the ultimate in application and data portability. The company is also releasing the public beta of EverNote Outlook Extension, an application that runs inside Windows Outlook and integrates content from EverNote with Outlook software.

EverNote software provides a single place for capturing, categorizing, and instantly locating all kinds of information, such as typed and handwritten notes, web clips, emails, phone messages, addresses, passwords, brainstorms, sketches, photos and documents, and accessing them across multiple platforms and devices. EverNote 2.0 allows users to share their notes via portable devices, email and instant messengers, capture and categorize notes with new universal clipping and linking features, as well as safely encrypt notes for public or private accessibility. Additionally, EverNote Plus 2.0 includes synchronization of notes via removable media.

There are a ton of note taking apps out there.  One Note, which isn’t included in MS Office, might be considered a leader, but frankly given it’s price point, never will be (or should be).  Evernote is just awesome in its free version and it is certainly worth a download and try.  What have I been using it for?  Well besides taking notes, I use the web clipping tool a lot.  Like when I was looking for an apartment.  I was using an online search to do this and I wanted to save the places I was interested in and be able to pull them up without needed the Net.  Evernote was perfect for this.  I could then make notes on the place (when or if I called, address, etc).  If the place was a no go, I just deleted the note.

Other stuff like archiving a blog post that I know will be useful in the future or an online receipt … perfect uses as well.  But wait, there’s more!  I noticed a new Outlook extension:

The EverNote Outlook Extension integrates EverNote’s advanced information capture, organization, and search with your Microsoft Office Outlook® environment - it’s the missing link in the Microsoft Office Suite. Built on the Outlook notepad model, EverNote lives in your Outlook environment to manage all of your personal content.

While cogitating over this post, I downloaded and installed it.  Now, for pre Outlook 2007 I think it would be great.  Outlook 2007, however, has changed how Notes are viewed so switching to notes isn’t that easy.  I’m going to give it a try because this extension could be awesome.  Note taking in Outlook!  That rocks.  I think.  Maybe.  I dunno, I think I’m used to taking notes in a separate app.

In the meantime of writing this post, I decided to uninstall it.  Why?  Well because I’ve been having funky problems with Outlook recently … so I decided to just let things be for now.
