Power Out? Check into your Corporate Hotel

by Scot Herrick on December 20th, 2006

The last several posts here on Pimp Your Work have been about the power being out in our neck of the woods. We’ve written about what things become important for you as a manager when the power goes out, what choice you have if you are self-employed, and what becomes important in one electrical minute.

But, if you work in a cube, the power goes out, and you want to move your family to warmth and safety — yet every hotel is booked in a three hour driving radius — what do you do?

If you work for a large company in a corporate headquarters location, you might have a corporate center where people come and stay when traveling for meetings and off-site get-togethers. Maybe you’ve even attended some of them.

If so, they are not on any reservation system. They aren’t available on the Internet. Corporate communications won’t get the word out until late.

But, you can score.

My corporate leadership center, with about 100 rooms, was without power for about 2.5 days. I tried calling them about every four hours but kept getting that busy signal that told me they didn’t have power. I even had some out of state friends call them because sometimes long distance gets through when local calls don’t.

And this last Sunday morning at 7:30 AM, the phone rang there and someone answered. There were plenty of rooms available. At 1:00 PM Sunday, my wife and I moved into our Corporate Leadership center with four days of reservations, warmth, showers, breakfast included, and Internet access — all at a Corporate rate. And a staff that knows the situation out there and is all about helping out.

Ten hours later, the place is booked up. In this case, getting in before Corporate Communications got the word out was critical.

I’m very fortunate to be able to do this and there was no damage to my house, unlike others. So don’t forget to have the phone number of your corporate leadership center in the cell phone list. You never know when you might need it. It’s one of those Pimpalicious tips.
