What gadget is a waste of company funds? Hint: It’s not a spaceship.

by Celine on January 23rd, 2008

Now, normally I feature gadgets that are cool, practical, on my wishlist, or all of the above.  This week’s gadget is a first: I think it’s a waste of company funds.  True, it’s more for those who want to impress, astound, and make the competition green with envy, but if that’s important to you, then you probably represent most of the things I don’t like about the corporate world.  Anyway, without further ado, I give you the Room Wizard.

“What’s it for?” you may ask.  It’s for scheduling meetings for conference rooms.  Right.  Like that can’t be done with shared calendars on MS Outlook or Google Calendar and a whiteboard with a marker.  Which, like the RoomWizard, doesn’t need an extra staff member to manage it.

If you’re a big tech company like Microsoft or Google where it’s ‘embarrassing’ to be analog, fine, fine, get one or five of these, but unless it’s a practical financial investment for you and your company, I don’t recommend it.  Here’s why:

It costs $2,000.00.  If your company gets a few of these, feel free to go “Ah, so that’s where my raise went”.

If there’s a meeting in progress, a shut door would do just fine.  You don’t need red and green flashing lights to tell people “Don’t come in, we have a meeting”.  If you do, an inexpensive circuit with LEDs can do the trick.  Or, you know, an Occupied/Not Occupied signboard.  Then again, the latter is more for bathroom stalls.

There are so many cheap/free things that can do the job just as well. I mentioned shared online calendars and whiteboards earlier in the post.  You can even draw a template calendar on the whiteboard and just change the month and dates accordingly.

What’s your take on this?  Do you think you’d get a good return of investment with the RoomWizard?  How do you deal with booking conference rooms and other shared spaces in your office?
