Pimp Your Work - Improving Your Work Day Efficiency

Is web working all it’s cracked up to be?

by Tris Hussey on January 15th, 2007

I’ve been a web worker for almost 7 years now.  I’m often asked if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.  Sure there are benefits and lots of people think I live the Life of Reilly, but there are down sides too.  WebWorkerDaily is asking this very question.  They are taking the positive side.  I’m going to look at the dark side.

I want to hear what you have to say, but for me the biggest dark side is the isolation.  Sometimes I just miss being in an office with other folks to hang out with and share with.  Nothing like sitting around a table and brainstorming and just tossing ideas around for breakthroughs and other coolness to happen.

The down side for me is often not being able to “turn if off.” I can always be at work, and sometimes I am. I do have a office job 3 days a week, and I find it is a nice break from web work. It also provides some good blog fodder. :)

Not being able to turn it off is the biggest problem I have. My “work week” just extends into Sat and Sun. I do try to take breaks, but it is always tempting to do “just one more thing … “
