Pimp Your Work - Improving Your Work Day Efficiency

How to Make Your Downward Dog Work for You

by Kammie on October 21st, 2006

Sitting on your bum all day “working” (yeah right, we caught ya surfing), can be tough on the tushy. The long and lean and mellow and zen folks at Yoga at Work, want to help you change all that.

They get that life is a circus and we’re all just juggling little colored balls or spinning plates in the air. If you’re like me, your juggling stuff like - work, friends, family, fun, health, wealth, spirituality, hobbies, etc.

Yoga at Work has designed this exercise to get you grounded and back into the flow of life lickety spit (NO I didn’t say you’d have to do the splits!). Stick with me here. They promise this little number should take no more than 2 minutes and the effects are long lasting.

In fact, they say the more you do this, the more the “benefits will manifest in your day to day life”. Sweet. Anytime I get to “manifest” at work, I’m stoked! Here goes:

  1. Sit upright with the crown of the head uppermost. Close your eyes or keep them open. Relax your jaw.
  2. Become aware of your breathing and inhale gently through the nose. Try and do this as slowly, smoothly and deeply as you possibly can, without straining.
  3. Breath out, exhaling through your nose and count mentally the number one. (Make the outbreath gentle, slow and complete. Your focus should be on your abdomen, near your navel).
  4. Inhale again, and this time as you breathe out count mentally the number two. Repeat this cycle until you have reached the number four. Three rounds of this exercise takes no more than two minutes.

Go ahead, give it a go. What have you got to lose? The benefits are said to “increase conentration, improve mental balance for better decision making and relax the nervous system”. Who couldn’t use a more relaxed nervous system? (Is that an oxymoron?)

This exercise might be helpful before your next meeting about a meeting. Or right before you ask your boss for a big chunck of change and a corner office. No worries. Don’t stress out. It’s all about the breath work. (Can somebody please pass a mint over here?)
